Wieliczka, małe miasteczko z wielką kopalnią

Wieliczka leży w województwie małopolskim, nieopodal Krakowa. Rynek Główny w Wieliczce oddalony jest w linii prostej dokładnie o 13 km od Rynku Głównego w Krakowie. Miasto leży w kotlinie między dwoma grzbietami wzgórz, rozciągającymi się z zachodu na wschód - Pogórza Wielickiego i Piasków Bogucickich. 

Wieliczka rozpoznawalna jest na skalę światową dzięki kopalni soli, którą co roku odwiedza ponad milion turystów. Kopalnia Soli “Wieliczka” od XIII wieku do 1772 roku wspólnie z kopalnią soli “Bochnia” wchodziła w skład żup krakowskich. Sole wydobywane pochodzą z epoki miocenu. W 1976 roku Kopalnia została wpisana do krajowego rejestru zabytków. Dwa lata później wpisana przez UNESCO na pierwszą Listę światowego dziedzictwa. W 1989 roku Kopalnia Soli „Wieliczka” poszerzyła Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa Zagrożonego, z której została skreślona w 1998 roku. Od 1994, to także pomnik historii Polski. 30 czerwca 1996 roku zaprzestano całkowicie eksploatacji złoża. Kopalnia soli Wieliczka w 2007 roku w plebiscycie „Rzeczpospolitej” została uznana za jeden z siedmiu cudów Polski, zdobywając największą liczbę głosów. 

Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna wielickiej kopalni powstała na przełomie XVIII i XIX wieku. Trasa obejmuje około 3 km trasy składającej się z 20 komór, położonych na głębokościach od 64 do 135 metrów (poziomy I – III). Na trasie jest do pokonania ok. 800 schodów. Część trasy przystosowana jest dla wózków inwalidzkich. Zwiedzanie trwa ok. 2–3 godziny.

Wieliczka obecnie pełni funkcję typowo turystyczną. Oprócz kopalni posiada wiele innych atrakcji. Godnym uwagi jest także Zamek Żupny, Muzeum Żup Krakowskich, Pałac Konopków, Pałac Przychockich, Kościół św. Sebastiana, Kościół św. Klemensa, Rynek Górny i Solne Miasto, Park i pomnik Adama Mickiewicza, aleja Jana Pawła II, największy obraz 3D w Polsce “Solny Świat” i wiele innych zabytków. 

Z uwagi na ogromne zainteresowanie wśród turystów, Wieliczka ma bardzo dobrze rozbudowaną bazę noclegową. Począwszy od hoteli, moteli po pensjonaty i kwatery prywatne. 

Urokliwe miasto, warto odwiedzenia, powinno znaleźć się na liście każdego turysty. Może stanowić idealne miejsce docelowe na wyjazd z rodziną czy znajomymi, aby odetchnąć wśród natury, z dala od wielkich miast.
